Today, responsible sourcing and environmental consciousness are not just personal values but also important business considerations. As many employees and consumers evaluate companies through these lenses, businesses are wise to be mindful about making sustainable choices, even down to the products they use in office buildings. This includes the drink central to many employees’ morning routine—a good, ol’ cup of joe.
The J.M. Smucker Co. and its coffee brands, including 1850, offer solutions that can check all the right boxes for businesses and their employees. The Company has invested significant resources and taken concrete actions to help support the greater good while also delivering delicious, high-quality coffee.
Promoting a Strong, Resilient Coffee Supply Chain One Smallholder Farmer at a Time
The coffee supply chain is unique, both in how it is managed and its broad global nature. With such massive scope and scale, one might think coffee beans are grown on large, industrial agricultural operations. In fact, most coffee beans are grown by farmers who operate relatively small farms in key coffee-growing regions around the world.
The Company has supported this commitment through many initiatives, including establishing relationships with partner organizations like Hanns R. Neumann Stiftung (HRNS), coffee & climate (c&c), TechnoServe and others that provide direct training to farmers, facilitating the development of a more resilient and sustainable smallholder coffee farming landscape. These trainings focus on key objectives, including:
- Developing farmer organizations that offer better access to markets, financial information and economic tools
- Improving coffee productivity in an environmentally friendly way
- Increasing climate change adaptability
- Addressing gender equity and youth engagement
- Expanding learnings to sustain results long-term
Achieving Rainforest Alliance Certification
As part of the brand’s commitment to protecting workers and the environment, 1850 has also made significant strides to achieve Rainforest Alliance certification. Previously, the 1850 fraction packs (often called “frac packs”) used 50% Rainforest Alliance Certified coffee. As of early 2025, that has increased to 100%.
The Rainforest Alliance seal on 1850 coffee means that the brand prioritized sustainability throughout the supply chain, starting with the farms where the coffee beans were grown.
Rainforest Alliance certification requires robust verification, including a check with independent auditors. The process ensures that companies and farms meet strict requirements to help protect and improve outcomes for both farmers and the land.1
Making Packaging Recyclable
For small offices with non-commercial coffee brewers, 1850 ground coffee is available in recyclable paperboard packs—an alternative to plastic canisters—that can help minimize plastic waste. These unique packs are made with at least 80% paper fiber.2
1850 is one of the first manufacturers to make these packs available to retailers in the U.S.
Choosing the Right 1850 Coffee
Ready to find the right solution?
When it comes to making employees happy, you can’t go wrong with any 1850 coffee. Each roast is made with fire-roasted, steel-cut, premium Arabica beans that deliver bold, smooth taste in every invigorating cup. The question is, which format is best for you?
If you’re providing coffee for an office with more than 10 people or have a commercial coffee brewer, 1850 frac packs — featuring Rainforest Alliance Certified™ coffee — are a quick and simple solution. Each pouch contains pre-measured ground beans and brews a consistent pot of coffee every time. Just pour into the filter and brew.
If you’re looking to supply an office with fewer than 10 people or using a traditional (non-commercial) coffeemaker, choose 1850 ground coffee in recyclable paperboard packaging. Simply measure and brew coffee as you usually would until the container is empty, then recycle it to give it a second life.
