Sustainability in the Office: Hammermill’s Dedicated Commitment to Environmental Stewardship

The sustainability ethos that guides Hammermill® papers is more than just a series of claims on paper.

Our Shared Responsibility

The sustainability ethos that guides Hammermill® papers is more than just a series of claims on paper. In fact, their commitment is their paper. That commitment is verified by third parties like the Forest Stewardship Council® (C168336) and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative®; leading certifications for paper manufacturers. Hammermill’s paper not only meets the demands of the modern workplace, it prioritizes stewardship. It’s part of how they set out to conscientiously produce Paper Made Right® for their environment, clients, communities and businesses large and small.

By choosing Hammermill paper, businesses can participate in a movement towards a brighter, more sustainable future — one where companies invest not only in quality, American-made products but also champion the conservation of important natural resources.

Paper’s Future: Renewable, Healthy and Abundant Forests

Hammermill’s initiatives that focus on responsible forest stewardship, emissions reduction and conservation help set the standard for environmentally conscious practices in the paper industry. These initiatives aren’t only necessary for the protection of forests; they’re necessary for the very future of Hammermill’s business. Without trees, there is no production of paper — by Hammermill or by anyone else.

If the economic incentive to grow trees for pulp and paper production went away, many of these working forests would likely be converted for development or agricultural use. This would mean the loss of millions of trees — one of nature’s most efficient tools for removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, purifying water and providing habitat for biodiversity. In fact, the total loss of forestland would have a substantial impact on the amount of the greenhouse gasses removed from the atmosphere each year. Hammermill’s conservation of forestland builds on a positive trend that the United States has seen for more than half a century: today, there are 20% more trees on the continent than there were in 1970.

Beyond these efforts, Hammermill has also taken the initiative by making changes to their own production process. Between 2010 and 2019, both Hammermill and their parent company Sylvamo reduced total carbon dioxide emissions by 22%. Sylvamo’s goals for the next decade are even more ambitious. They encompass conservation, restoration and enhancement of 250,000 acres of forestland, as well as an additional 35% reduction in emissions against a 2019 baseline.

Achieving Sustainability Together

Hammermill’s commitment to sustainability is far more than sheet deep. Between responsible forest stewardship and dedicated commitments to further reducing their carbon footprint, it’s clear that their care for our common environment is at the core of all they set out to do.  Furthermore, Hammermill works to drive positive change, conserve essential forest ecosystems, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help contribute to a healthier, greener future for everyone.
